Biodegradation is the degradation of materials by biological means. It can be caused by microorganisms such as bacteria , fungi , etc. This biological degradation can take place either aerobically or anaerobically, depending on the oxygen content in the environment. The term biodegradable is used to mean any material that is biodegradable, and the term non-biodegradable refers to the opposite of that. Non-biodegradable materials are not subject to biodegradation. The main difference between biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials is that biodegradable materials can be easily biodegraded or dissolved, while non-biodegradable materials cannot biodegrade or dissolve.

What is biodegradable

The term biodegradable is used to denote any material that is capable of being biodegradable. This means that these materials can be biodegraded; B. by bacteria, fungi, etc. The degradation of these materials should take place safely and quickly and the end product should be a raw material that can be released into the environment without damage to the environment. Biodegradable materials can be either solids or liquids. When solid materials biodegrade and the end product is released into the soil; When liquid materials biodegrade, the end products are released into the water.

There are several factors that affect the rate at which a biodegradable material will biodegrade. A highly biodegradable material has a higher rate of biodegradation; Thus it is converted into raw materials in a very short time. Some of the factors are listed below.

  • temperature
  • Bioavailability

Biodegradation can be measured with a respirometry test suitable for measuring aerobic biodegradation. This procedure involves placing a sample of material (along with microorganisms) in a container, followed by appropriate ventilation. Then the amount of carbon dioxide produced is measured over the period of biological degradation (microorganisms form CO 2 gas as a by-product of biological degradation).

What is not biodegradable?

The term non-biodegradable refers to materials that are non-biodegradable. These materials do not degrade naturally. Therefore, these non-biodegradable materials are harmful if released into the environment.

The most common examples of non-biodegradable materials include plastics, polyethylene, and many other synthetic polymer materials. However, there are some synthetic polymers that are rapidly biodegradable: polycaprolactone, polyester, aromatic esters, etc.

Non-biodegradable : Examples of non-biodegradable materials include plastics, polyethylene, and many other synthetic polymer materials.
