What is a bagel
A bagel is a firm bun in the shape of a donut. It is traditionally formed by hand into a ring (donut shape) from yeast-wheat dough and then left to rise at a low temperature for about 12 hours. Then it is boiled in water for some time before baking. This unusual preparation method creates a chewy and dense interior and a browned and sometimes crispy exterior. The ingredients for a traditional bagel are flour , yeast, water and salt. The flour used is often white flour made from refined grains. Seeds like sesame, poppy seeds, and sunflower are often added to the top crust of the bagel when baking. Bagels often have a sweet taste because a sweetener such as sugar, honey, barley malt, etc. is added to most bagel doughs.
Although there are many theories about the origin of the bagel, it is believed to have originated in Poland and was introduced to the US by Jewish migrants from Eastern Europe.
